The chef’s uniform as we know it comes from 19th-century French kitchens, where the white double-breasted jacket and tall toque became the sign of a professional cook. It’s one of the most popular career day costumes for kids, and it’s easy for adults too. You probably have half of it in your kitchen already.
What Makes It Work
The tall white hat is the signature. A paper toque works great, or make one from white poster board and tissue paper puffed on top.
For the jacket, a white double-breasted chef’s coat is classic, but a white button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled works fine for kids. Add an apron, black or black-and-white checked pants, and a small red neckerchief tied at the neck.
Props make it fun. Carry a wooden spoon, a whisk, a rolling pin or a small pan. A little flour dusted on the apron and a stick-on mustache add personality.
What People Get Wrong
Skipping the hat. Without it, a white shirt and apron looks like a server or a painter. The other miss is a floppy hat that won’t stand up; stuff the top with tissue.
Buy It or Build It?
Kids’ chef costume sets with a hat, apron and utensils run $15 to $30. Paper chef hats come in packs for a few dollars, which is great for a class or group.
