What Makes It Work

The tail makes the turkey. A big fan of feathers in brown, rust, orange and gold standing up behind you. Felt or foam feathers on a curved backing work great and won’t shed.

The body is plump and brown. A stuffed brown tunic or a puffy brown hoodie. Then the head: a hood or headband with a beak, googly eyes and that wobbly red wattle hanging from the chin.

Finish with orange or yellow leggings and orange shoe covers for the turkey feet. For a race, a lighter version with just the tail and a headpiece is much easier to run in.

What People Get Wrong

A tail that flops over. Without a stiff backing, the feathers droop and you look more like a sad chicken. Use foam board or cardboard behind the felt feathers. For running, skip the full stuffed body or you’ll overheat by mile one.
