The beak was stuffed with herbs, which doctors thought would block disease. Centuries later, the mask became a Venetian Carnival favorite, and today it’s a cult costume for masquerades, Halloween and conventions.
What Makes It Work
The mask is the costume. A black or leather-look beaked mask with round glass eyes is what everyone recognizes, and good ones are surprisingly light.
Add a wide-brimmed black hat, a long black coat, cloak or robe that reaches the ankles, and black gloves so no skin shows. A high collar or a hood under the hat finishes the silhouette.
Carry a wooden cane (doctors used them to examine patients without touching them) and a leather satchel or bottles of “remedies” on your belt. Stand still in a corner and people will give you plenty of room.

A cheap plastic mask with tiny eye holes. You’ll be walking blind all night, so look for wide lenses. The other miss is bright colors; plague doctors are all black and brown.
