Dragons show up in legends all over the world, from the fire-breathing beasts of medieval Europe to the long serpent dragons of China. As a costume, a dragon is a book week and birthday party favorite that works just as well for adults at a Renaissance faire. The DIY version is easy and looks great.
What Makes It Work
Start with a hoodie and leggings in one color: green, red, purple or black. The hood becomes the dragon’s head.
Glue or stitch felt scales in overlapping rows down the front, and a row of felt or foam spikes from the top of the hood down the spine. Add two small felt horns and eyes to the hood.
Wings and a tail make it a dragon. Cut bat-shaped wings from felt and attach them from the wrists to the back so they open when you lift your arms. Stuff a long felt tube for the tail and pin it to the back of the leggings. Glitter on the scales catches the light nicely.
What People Get Wrong
Too few spikes and no tail. Those are what separate a dragon from a lizard or a dinosaur. The other miss is wings that don’t open; attach them to the sleeves.
