You don’t need a famous character to be a superhero. An original hero is one of the most fun costumes there is, because you get to pick the name, the colors and the powers. Kids love it, and it’s a great way around the licensing price of the big-name suits.
What Makes It Work
Start with two colors and stick to them. Every great hero has a strong color scheme, like red and gold, green and black, or purple and silver. One main color for the suit and one accent color for everything else.
The cape and the mask do most of the work. A cape that hangs to the knees and a simple eye mask instantly say “hero.” Then add an emblem on the chest, a big letter, a lightning bolt or a symbol tied to the hero’s power. Felt cut-outs stuck on with fabric glue work great.
Finish with a belt, matching gloves or wrist cuffs and boots. Standing with your fists on your hips is technically optional.
What People Get Wrong
Too many colors. A rainbow of pieces looks like a pile of dress-up clothes, not a hero. Pick two colors and repeat them. The other common miss is a cape that’s too short. A cape that stops at the shoulder blades looks like a bib. Go to the knee.
Buy It or Build It?
Generic superhero cape and mask sets run about $10 to $25, and plenty of kits come with a blank emblem to customize. Build the rest from a solid-color top and leggings you already own.

FAQ
How do I make my own superhero costume?
Pick two colors, get a solid top and leggings in the main color, then add a cape, an eye mask and a felt emblem in the accent color. A belt pulls it together.
What's a good superhero name for a kid?
Let them name it after their power or their favorite thing. Captain Lightning, Shadow Cat and The Amazing Ava are all great, and they’ll remember it all night.
Is a cape safe for kids trick-or-treating?
Look for capes that attach with Velcro rather than a tied string around the neck, so they pull off easily if they catch on something.
Can a group do original superheroes?
Yes, and it’s a great group costume. Give everyone matching emblems or a shared color so you look like a team.
