The 1920s gangster comes straight out of Prohibition, the era from 1920 to 1933 when bootleggers and speakeasies ran on the other side of the law. It’s the classic partner to the flapper, and it’s one of the sharpest-looking costumes you can wear.

What Makes It Work

It’s all about the suit. A pinstripe suit in black, gray or navy is the signature, but any dark suit works. A double-breasted jacket looks even more period correct. Suspenders under the jacket are a nice detail.

The hat is the second must-have. A fedora in black or gray, worn slightly tilted. A newsboy cap is a good alternative for a lower-level gangster look.

Then the small things. A white or colored dress shirt, a wide tie or a bow tie, a pocket square, spats or two-tone shoes, and a toy tommy gun or a cigar prop if you’re allowed to bring one.

What People Get Wrong

Wearing a modern slim-fit suit with skinny lapels. 1920s suits were cut fuller, with wider lapels and higher-waisted pants. Thrift stores often have better vintage-style suits than costume kits. Also, check the rules before bringing a toy gun. Plenty of parties and venues don’t allow them.

Buy It or Build It?

Kits run about $30 to $80, usually a jacket, hat and tie. If you already own a dark suit, a fedora and a pinstripe tie gets you there for under $30.

FAQ

What goes with a 1920s gangster costume for couples?

A flapper is the classic match. Bonnie and Clyde are a great pair too, though their famous crime spree was actually in the early 1930s.

What's the difference between a gangster and a Gatsby costume?

Gatsby is the wealthy party host: cream or white suits, bow ties and a polished look. Gangster is darker, with pinstripes, fedoras and a tougher attitude.

Can a woman wear a gangster costume?

Absolutely. A fitted pinstripe suit or a pinstripe dress, a fedora and red lipstick is a popular look.

What shoes go with a gangster costume?

Black or two-tone wingtip dress shoes. Spat covers make them look extra 1920s.
