Punk exploded out of London and New York in the mid-1970s, and the whole look was do-it-yourself. That makes it perfect for a costume. You’re supposed to tear things up, pin them back together and cover them in patches.
What Makes It Work
The jacket is the centerpiece. A black leather or jean jacket covered in patches, safety pins, studs and marker is pure punk. Pin, don’t sew, so you can take it all off later.
Underneath, a ripped T-shirt held together with safety pins, plaid pants or ripped black jeans, and combat boots. Add a spiked collar or a studded belt.
Hair and makeup matter. Spike your hair straight up with gel, or try a temporary color spray in green, pink or blue. Heavy black eyeliner works for anyone.
What People Get Wrong
Everything brand new and clean. Punk is worn, torn and handmade. Rough it up. The other miss is a costume-store mohawk wig, which usually looks fake. Spike your own hair if you can.
Buy It or Build It?
Punk costume kits run $25 to $50 but tend to look cheap. Buy patches, safety pins and spray hair color for about $20, and use your own jacket and jeans.
